MTN Zambia To Spend Millions On Upgrades

Cellphone operator MTN Zambia plans to invest $25-million (about R175-million) in network upgrades to capture between 500 000 and one million more subscribers in 2010, Chief Executive Officer Farhad Khan said on Wednesday.

MTN Zambia is a unit of South Africa's MTN, Africa's largest wireless phone operator, which has more than 108 million subscribers in Africa and the Middle East.

MTN is Zambia's second largest mobile phone operator with a subscriber base of slightly over one million and 15 percent of the market share after Zain Zambia, a unit of Kuwait mobile firm Zain with 78 percent of the market share.

Facebook's Impact On Marketing, Advertising

With over 2.6 million unique monthly browsers, 1.18 billion monthly page views, 46% of active users returning to the site daily, 1.58 million users on mobile platform and 78% of users coming back every week, South Africa is the 29th largest Facebook (FB) country across the globe.

"Brands managers are no longer controlling the brand, but only suggesting brands policies and strategies," Blake Chandlee, of Facebook (FB), told a packed Venue' Melrose Arch yesterday , Wednesday 3 February 2010, in Johannesburg.

Consumers are now controlling the brand, Chandlee said, adding that the dawn of social media has changed consumers' thinking and buying behaviour.
